Orthopedic Technology

The Orthopaedic Technology department is one of the core departments in the physical rehabilitation unit in the ministry of health. It is mandated with carrying out clinical assessments, prescription, technical design, fabrication and fitting of orthopaedic assistive devices i.e. prosthetics/orthotics.
Staff (orthopaedic technologists) work with other team players in promotive, preventive, corrective, rehabilitative and palliative care of patients with orthopaedic, neurological conditions and musculoskeletal deformities.

Services offered include:-

1.    Disability assessments and categorization
2.    Club foot (CTEV) management
3.    Prescribing, designing, measuring, fabricating and fitting assistive devices such as;
a.    mobility aids-crutches
b.    Allium splints for knocked knees ( genu valgus) and bow legs (genu varus)
c.    Spinal jackets/corsets for spinal deformities
d.    Knee ankle foot orthoses and ankle foot orthoses for  weak lower limbs in cerebral palsy and paralysis of the lower limbs
e.    Shoe raise for leg discrepancy
f.    Prostheses for leg amputations
g.    Calcaneal pads for planter fascitis/ calcaneal spurs
h.    Arch supports, medial and lateral wedges for foot abnormalities
i.    Derotator harness for correcting internal hip rotation  (Provide a link)
